Get started is as easy 123, the most important step is to belong to a CAMS affiliated club that can help you make your dream a reality.  Below are the steps and links to forms to get you straight on track, however first it is good to get an idea of what different events are about :

Supersprints in NSW are conducted on circuits such  as Eastern Creek, Oran Park and Wakefield Park with a limited number of cars on the track at the same time. Typically, competitors run a series of three flying laps, with the fastest lap determining the result. Grouped in classes, competing vehicles range from standard road registered cars to very fast sport sedans and open wheelers.

Supersprints teach drivers the technique of consistent fast laps and the analysis of track time in traffic.

Hillclimbs in NSW, a traditional form of the sport conducted for more than 70 years in Australia, pit cars and drivers against challenging uphill courses with varying corners and gradients. Cars run individually, with drivers aiming for the fastest time. Hillclimbs are run at Eastern Creek, Wakefield Park and Mount Panorama, as well as many permanent and temporary courses throughout NSW and Australia. Competing vehicles range from road registered cars to purpose built hi-tech hillclimb specials.

Hillclimbs teach drivers the technique of standing starts, qualifying and the perfect lap in addition to adapting to track conditions in amongst competition conditions.

Regularity Trials are a slightly different concept to the above but no less important in a racing driver's education. A regularity trial is run on a circuit such as Oran Park, drivers are required to nominate a lap time and then maintain it consistently during the whole event.  In this type of race the replication of a lap is rewarded more than speed, it may sound simple but in reality this is a core skill that separates the ordinary driver from the talented.

Follow these three easy steps to become a competitor in any of the above type of event :

1. Club and licence

  • Join our club. Download MWSCC application and send the completed forms with payment to the club secretary (see Contact Us for address details). The club will issue you a membership card, which must be shown at events.
and mandatory Manly Leagues Club application

  • Purchase a CAMS level 2S licence. Download application and send with payment to the address shown on the back of the form. CAMS will send you a licence and competitor guide.

2. Car and kit

To compete in a road registered car, there are a number of minimum requirements that must be met, including:

  • Bonnet: Bonnets must have a secondary securing device (commonly a belt strap or bonnet pins).
  • Fire Extinguisher: Cars must be fitted with an extinguisher of at least 900g capacity that meets Australian Standard 1841 and, if not new, has been tested in the last three years by an authorised agent.
  • Battery: Vehicles must display a blue triangle of 150mm sides, indicating the position of the battery. The battery should also be fitted with an isolator switch.
  • Glass protection: Headlights must be covered in a transparent film to prevent broken glass being left on the circuit.
  • Competition numbers: Event regulations will require competition numbers in compliance with the CAMS Manual. However, competitors in road cars often display numbers created by tape. Consult the event organiser regarding the requirements for their event.
  • Log book: Competing vehicles require a log book issued by CAMS. Download application and send with payment to CAMS at the address shown on the form. Note that competitors running in events organised by their own club and most multi-club events do not require a log book to compete.

If you are planning to run a more modified vehicle, or a purpose built race car, you should consult the current CAMS Manual of Motorsport (www.camsmanual.com.au) and event supplementary regulations to ensure compliance.

  • Personal kit: Competitors in speed events are required to wear a helmet that meets the Australian Standard AS1698. Other selected standards are acceptable, as detailed in the CAMS Manual. Neck to ankle clothing is also required, as are covered shoes. Synthetic clothing or shoes are not acceptable.
  • Championship events: Supersprint Championship events in NSW now require competitors to wear an acceptable fire retardant driving suit. Check the CAMS Manual for compliance details.

3. Competition

Members of MWSCC are invited to compete in multi-club and championship events across NSW, with events typically staged between February and December each year.  A calendar of upcoming events can be found via the CAMS website (www.cams.com.au)

To compete in events:

  • Entry: Complete entry forms and send to the organising club. The organiser will usually advise you by mail that your entry has been accepted and your competition number.
  • Competition: On the day of competition, arrive early to allow adequate time for administrative check-in and vehicle scrutineering. You must provide your club membership card, licence and log book at check-in. Vehicles must be presented in a ready-to-compete condition, and your helmet and race clothing must also be presented at scrutineering for inspection.
  • Registration: To receive priority entry to Championship Hillclimb and Supersprint events, you can become a registered competitor in these competitions by contacting the CAMS State office. Registrations are usually received at the beginning of each year. Registration also entitles you to retain a competition number throughout the year. Championship supplementary regulations are also available from CAMS.

Other important information regarding events will be provided in the supplementary regulations and at the driver’s briefing on the morning of the event.
